Charisse has been a fitness enthusiast for most of her life. Her journey started after the loss of 2 of her immediate family members due to health issues, which gave her the motivation to kick start where she is currently. She is now a Certified Personal Trainer with NASM, with a myriad of certifications. She is also a Group Fitness Instructor with Les Mills and teaches a variety of classes. Charisse's class challenges her students with total body movements in a way that is necessary for healthy aging and is suitable for all fitness levels.

6 Good Questions with Charisse Burrus

Published 3/21/2024

Next in our 6 Good Questions series is another newcomer, Charisse Burrus! She's been with us for about a year now teaching Functional Movement & Strength Training (30 min) on Thursdays at 7:30pm ET / 4:30pm PT.

Who are your classes for? What kind of vibe can people expect in your class? What is your teaching style like?

I'd like to say my classes are for everyone as we all need to move functionally and have strength to move safely and with confidence as we go through our daily activities whether we are picking something up or reaching up to put something on a shelf, etc. My class participants can expect to have a little fun while getting stronger with each class as I encourage them to work hard, of course only if they are up to it and can do so. My personal training background is a huge part of my teaching style as I am big on proper form with all of the exercises I show to ensure that we are all working safely and getting the most out of each and every exercise!

How did you get into functional movement?

As we move throughout our day, we are continuously performing functional movements and they become even more important to focus on as we age. Not aging myself, lol, but we want to focus on this type of training to ensure that we are ready for the activities that are ahead of us whether we are home or out in the world.

What's the most valuable lesson you've learned from your own practice? What does strength mean to you?

This is a great question as I've learned that we need strength more and more the older we get. Most may think that all we need is cardio, but strength is so important to keep our bones strong, increase our muscle mass, increase bone density, improves our posture, etc..

Do you have any pets? We love our #petsofompractice ❤️

I currently have a Norwegian Forest cat named Thorfinn, who is 17 years old.
